Adding signup flows to your website subscribe forms

Every beehiiv publication can create custom signup flows that guide new subscribers through a series of redirect pages after they click to subscribe. You can assign a unique signup flow to any subscribe form on your beehiiv website, giving you full control over the experience readers have when joining your newsletter.

Each signup flow can include multiple redirection steps, and you’ll have flexible options for how that journey ends, including the ability to send subscribers to a custom URL of your choice.

In this article, we’ll walk through the different types of signup flow pages available, how to create a flow in your account, and how to assign it to a subscribe form on your site.

Tech Note: While you can create subscribe forms and attach a signup flow directly in the Website Builder, embedded subscribe forms do not support signup flows.

Signup flow page options

You can build a signup flow using any combination of the following page types. These pages help shape the experience subscribers have as they complete the signup process.

  • Recommendations Page: Highlight your favorite newsletters by featuring your Top 4 Recommendations. These are shown to new subscribers after they sign up for your publication. If you're using Boosts, these will appear at the top of your Recommendations page.

  • Subscribe Survey: Collect valuable insights by adding a survey to your signup flow. This is a great way to gather zero-party data, or info that your subscribers intentionally share with you.

  • Upgrade Page: If your publication offers paid subscriptions, you can direct new subscribers to your Upgrade Page to showcase premium content or benefits and encourage them to upgrade.

  • Multi Pubs: For accounts with multiple publications, this step allows subscribers to opt into your other newsletters as part of the signup process.

  • Home Page: This is typically the final step in a signup flow. While most use their publication’s Home Page URL, you can redirect to any URL, including a custom ‘Thank You’ page. To do this, use the Custom Page feature to create your own page, then update the Home Page URL in the flow to point to it.

How to create a signup flow in the Website Builder

  1. In the Website Builder, click the Settings icon in the top navbar, then select the Signup Flows tab.

  2. Click Add signup flow to create a new flow.

  3. In the modal that appears, enter a Name for your flow.

  4. From the Steps dropdown menu, select any internal pages already published on your website.

  5. Once added, use the 6 dots icon next to each URL to drag and drop your steps into your preferred order.

  6. To add an external URL, type the full address (including https://) into the text field. External links will be labeled with a blue External tag.

Tech Note: External URLs can only be used as the final step in a signup flow.
  1. By default, external URLs will open in a new tab. To keep users in the same tab, toggle on Open external link in the same tab.

  2. If this is your only signup flow, it will be automatically set as your default.

The default signup flow will be applied to all signup forms on your website. If you’ve created multiple flows, you can toggle Set as default on or off to choose your preferred default.

  3. Click on Create to save your signup flow.

  4. Once saved, you’ll return to the main Signup Flows page. Your new flow will be listed along with its number of steps. Click the 3 dots menu to Edit or Delete the flow at any time.

How to assign a signup flow to a subscribe form

Each subscribe form on your website must have a signup flow assigned to guide subscribers through the appropriate steps. Your default signup flow will automatically apply to all subscribe forms unless you manually assign different signup flows to your various subscribe forms.

Reminder: These steps apply only to subscribe forms created within the Website Builder. Embedded subscribe forms added using custom HTML blocks do not support signup flows.
  1. In the Website Builder, click on any subscribe form that you have added to your website.

  2. On the left, you’ll see that you’re editing the Subscribe Form container. In the attributes panel on the right, locate the Signup Flow field.

  3. Click the dropdown to select an existing signup flow, or click Create a signup flow to build a new one.

  4. After assigning your desired flow, be sure to publish your page to make the changes live.
