--- title: "How to copy page content to a default page" updated: 2026-05-21 --- # How to copy page content to a default page > **Notice** > > This article covers the new Website Builder, which is continuously evolving based on customer feedback. Some details seen here may differ from what you see in-app. The copy page content feature lets you take the draft content from a custom page and apply it to one of your default pages, like your Home or About page without losing either page's identity or settings. This is especially helpful when you've been building or refining a layout on a custom page and want to move that work onto a core page of your site. This article walks you through how it works, what to expect, and how to preserve your existing default page content if needed. > **Note** > > This feature copies draft content only. It does not affect any published versions of your pages until you [publish the changes](https://www.beehiiv.com/support/article/34055410040727-how-to-publish-your-website). --- ## How to copy page content to a default page 1. In the Website Builder, open the custom page you want to copy content from. 2. From the left panel, click on the **3 dots menu** next to the custom page name, then select **Copy page content** from the menu.  ![](https://beehiivhelp.zendesk.com/hc/article_attachments/40640113142679) 3. (Optional) If you want to preserve the current draft of the target page, check the box next to **Preserve the existing “default” page content**. ![](https://beehiivhelp.zendesk.com/hc/article_attachments/40640113143703) > **Pro Tip** > > Use this option any time you're unsure about overwriting your default page. You can always go back to the saved custom page and copy the content back if needed. 5. Enter a name and URL slug for the new custom page that will be created from the default page's current draft. ![](https://beehiivhelp.zendesk.com/hc/article_attachments/40640095103895) 6. Click on the **Copy page** button to apply the change. ![](https://beehiivhelp.zendesk.com/hc/article_attachments/40640095105175) Once confirmed, the draft content from your custom page will be copied onto the selected default page. > **Tech Note** > > The copy-to-default flow only reads the source page's draft content and pushes it into the target default page. It does not modify, disable, or delete the source custom page, or (when applicable) the new page to preserve your existing page content. Both types of custom pages are enabled by default. If you wish for either page to be inaccessible to your website visitors, [disable the page](https://www.beehiiv.com/support/article/33699539470615-using-pages-in-the-website-builder) before [publishing your website](https://www.beehiiv.com/support/article/34055410040727-how-to-publish-your-website). --- ## What stays the same when copying content onto a default page The copy page content feature only updates the draft content of the target page. The following do not change: - The default page's name and slug. - Its position in your navbar or footer. - Its page type and role on your site. - The custom page you copied from; it remains as-is. You can copy content onto any of your standard default pages, such as Home or About. Account-related pages, like your login or password reset, are not available as targets and will not appear in the dropdown. --- ## Frequently asked questions about copy page content **Can I copy content from one default page to another?** No. This feature is designed to copy content from a custom page onto a default page. You cannot use a default page as the source. **Will copying page content affect my published site?** No. The copy only updates the draft version of your default page. Your live site won't change until you publish the updated page. **What happens to the original custom page after copying?** Nothing. The custom page stays exactly as it is. The copy page content feature doesn't delete or alter the source page. **Can I undo a copy page content action?** There's no direct undo option, but if you preserved your existing content before confirming, it will be saved as a new custom page. You can then copy that content back onto the default page to restore it. As a best practice, always preserve your existing content as a backup.  In the event that you did not preserve your existing content but would like to restore the default page, you can do so by using your [website version history](https://beehiivhelp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/35382777485079) to restore the content of your website prior to the copy. **Can I rename the custom page that gets created when preserving content?** Yes. You can choose both the name and the URL slug for the new custom page during the copy process.
