Verification outcomes for paid recommendation subscribers

Every subscriber you gain through a paid recommendation is checked to confirm they're a genuine, high-quality reader. beehiiv records the outcome of that check on each subscriber's profile using subscriber tags and custom fields, so you have full visibility into your list and can decide how to handle subscribers who don't pass.

Previously, the auto-clean setting could automatically remove subscribers who failed verification. That option has been removed. Subscribers who don't pass stay on your list by default, and you control what happens next.

Verification subscriber tags

Every subscriber acquired through a paid recommendation is automatically given one of the following tags:

  • Rec: Pending Verification: verification is still in progress.
  • Rec: Verified: the subscriber passed verification.
  • Rec: Failed Verification:  the subscriber did not pass.
Tech Note: These tags are reserved for the beehiiv system. You can filter and act on them, but you cannot edit or delete them.

How to use verification data

Because these are standard subscriber tags and custom fields, they work with beehiiv's existing audience tools.

Segments: Build a segment filtered by tag to get a view of any group of verification outcomes. Read Creating and using segments in beehiiv for more details.

Automations: Trigger an automation when a subscriber receives a specific tag or custom field value. For example, automatically remove subscribers tagged Rec: Failed Verification, or send them a re-engagement email before deciding. Refer to Methods for enrolling subscribers into automations for more information.

Pro Tip: beehiiv includes a pre-built automation template that automatically removes subscribers who fail verification. Turn it on from your Automations dashboard if you'd like to keep your list clean without building the automation yourself.
