Using the beehiiv MCP with your community
The beehiiv MCP lets your AI tool take real action inside your beehiiv community using plain-language prompts. This article walks through what that looks like in practice, from setting up channels to moderating reports to analyzing engagement.
If you haven't connected the MCP yet, refer to Getting started with the beehiiv MCP for detailed instructions. For everything else the MCP can do outside of community, read What you can do with the beehiiv MCP.
Set up and manage your community
Your AI tool can create your community (complete with a default General channel, if you don't already have one) and update its name, description, brand colors, tier gating, newsletter sync, direct messages, and mobile app settings. It can also create and edit channels, including gating a channel behind premium tiers.
Example prompts:
- "Create a community for my publication using my website's brand colors, and add channels for Introductions, Wins, and Q&A."
- "Gate my Insider channel behind my Founding Member tier."
- "Turn on newsletter sync so my posts flow into the community, and enable direct messages."
Post and engage
Your AI tool can write and edit community posts and comments on your behalf (authored as you, the publication owner), reply in threads, and pin or unpin posts in their channels. Community content supports paragraphs, headings, lists, quotes, basic formatting, images, emoji, and link cards.
Example prompts:
- "Write a welcome post for my General channel explaining what each channel is for, and pin it."
- "Draft a discussion post in my Q&A channel based on the top questions from my last three newsletter posts."
- "Reply to the top comments on my latest community post, keep my tone, keep it short."
Grow your community
Your AI tool can find your most engaged subscribers (ranked by open and click rate) and invite them to your community, or send invites to a saved segment or a list of emails. Invites are created and emailed in the background, and it can check who's still pending.
Example prompts:
- "Find my 100 most engaged subscribers and invite them to my community."
- "Invite everyone in my 'High Intent Free' segment to the community."
- "How many of my community invites are still pending? List the 20 most recent."
Moderate
Your AI tool can work your moderation queue: list reports on posts and comments (pending first, most-reported first), dismiss reports, ban or unban members, and manage member roles.
Example prompts:
- "Show me my community's pending reports and summarize what each one is about."
- "Dismiss the reports on that post about pricing; it doesn't break any rules."
- "Ban the member who posted the spam, and make Sarah a moderator."
Analyze
Your AI tool can pull your community's overview metrics (new members, posts created, comments and replies, and member participation, each with a previous-period comparison) and read through channels, posts, comments, and members to answer questions about what's happening.
Example prompts:
- "How did my community do in the last 30 days vs the previous 30? Give me the four overview metrics."
- "Summarize this week's most-discussed community posts and what members are asking for."
- "Which members joined in the last two weeks and haven't posted yet? Draft a welcome comment strategy."
