Creating, pinning, and managing community posts
Creating and managing posts is where your community either feels alive or feels empty, and the difference comes down to a handful of habits. This guide covers how to create a post, what rich content you can add, and how to pin, moderate, and manage posts so your feed and channels stay active and easy to navigate.
Create a post
- In your community, click into the channel you want to post in (or post from the feed).
- Select Create a post at the bottom of your page.
- The community post modal will open. Add a Title and write your post in the provided text fields.
- Choose which channel your post belongs in by using the drop-down at the top of your post modal.
- Use the formatting toolbar on the bottom to edit your text formatting or add emojis, images, links, or attach another community post to your post.
- When you’ve completed editing, click on the Post button.
What you can add to a post
The composer supports rich content:
- Text formatting: Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, and code.
- Images: JPG, PNG, GIF, or WebP, up to 10 MB.
- GIFs: Search and add GIFs, powered by GIPHY.
- Emojis: Search and add emojis.
- Links: Attach links with a rich link preview.
- Attach a community post: Share another post from your community into your post (one attached post at a time).
Pin a post
Pin your most important posts (a welcome post, community guidelines, a weekly thread) to the top of a channel so every member sees them first.
- Navigate to the channel you want to pin your post to, and find your post.
- Click on the 3 dots menu on the post to open the post's action menu. Then, select Pin post.
To unpin, open the same menu and select Unpin post. Pinned posts appear at the top of their channel for everyone.
Manage comments on a post
Every post has threaded comments: members can comment and reply to comments. From a post's 3 dots menu you can:
- Close comments. No new comments can be added. Members see a "Comments are closed" banner; existing comments stay visible.
- Hide comments. Comments are hidden from members entirely and stay visible only to admins and moderators.
Use close for threads that have run their course, and hide when a thread needs to come down while you review it.
Edit or delete a post
From your post's 3 dots menu:
- Edit post: This allows you to update the title or body. Edited posts are marked as edited.
-
Delete post: Use this to remove it permanently. This cannot be undone.
How the feed works
- The Feed is home to all posts. Members see two tabs: For you (posts across the community) and Following (posts from members they follow).
- Posts are sorted in reverse chronological order.
- Channels are essentially a filtered view of the feed. When a post is made in a channel a member has access to, it also appears in their Feed.
- Members can react to posts and comments, and comment in threads (replies go one level deep).
- Members can repost a peer's post with their own thoughts, quoting the original post inside their own.
Post ideas to keep momentum
Before you invite anyone, seed each channel with a few conversation starters so the community never looks empty. For frameworks on prompts that get replies, check out these resources from beehiiv's head of community.
